Как конвертировать GIF в Live Photo (iPhone)

A GIF loops in chat and on the web. An iPhone lock screen will not treat that GIF as a Live Photo. iOS wants a still image plus a short movie — the pair Apple stores as a Live Photo. This guide shows how to build that pair from a GIF in the browser, import it, and set it on the lock screen.

Open GIF to Live Photo. The page is public. Conversion runs locally in your browser, so the GIF stays on your device. The tool is permanent free — open it and convert. For the wider set of converters, start at the Live Photo hub.

Why a GIF is not a new Live Photo

People reach for a GIF when they already have a loop: a product spin, a meme, a short reaction, a three-frame before/after. Chat apps and websites play GIFs everywhere. The iPhone Photos app and the lock screen do not.

A Live Photo is a still frame plus a short video that plays when you press and hold. A GIF is one palette-limited animation with no separate still. Saving the GIF into Photos keeps it as a file or a still, not as a lock-screen Live Photo.

Use a GIF when the audience is chat, email, or a website. Convert that GIF into a Live Photo when the destination is an iPhone lock screen or the Photos library. If your source is already an MP4 or MOV, follow How to convert video to Live Photo on iPhone instead of re-encoding through GIF. The Live Photo complete guide covers the rest of the cluster — create, convert, and export — without repeating those steps here.

What the JPG+MOV ZIP actually is

FreeMake.cc packs the result as a ZIP with two files:

  • A JPG still. This is the frame the lock screen shows before you press and hold.
  • A MOV clip. This is the motion that plays on press-and-hold.

That pair is what iOS expects. You do not need a separate Live Photo app, and you do not upload the GIF to a server. After the browser finishes, download the ZIP and move it to the iPhone.

Keep the loop short. Native shutter Live Photos are about a second and a half of motion. Loops built from video work best around 3–15 seconds. A long GIF makes a heavy MOV and a sluggish lock screen. Trim the idea in your head first: one clear motion, not a full clip.

Steps: upload, build, download

  1. Open GIF to Live Photo on a desktop or phone browser.
  2. Upload the animated GIF. PNG, JPG, and WebP stills are not the same job — this path is for a GIF that already moves.
  3. Build the Live Photo in the browser. Wait until the ZIP is ready. The still and the movie are created together.
  4. Download the ZIP. It contains the JPG and the MOV. Leave both files together until Photos has imported them.

If you are already on the iPhone, you can download the ZIP in Safari and open it from Files. On a computer, download first, then send the package to the phone.

Crop before you convert when you can. Lock screens crop hard. A square loop or a 9:16 vertical loop survives better than a wide banner with the subject in a corner. Black bars usually mean the GIF aspect does not match the phone.

Import with AirDrop or Files

AirDrop from a Mac or another Apple device

  1. Unzip only if AirDrop refuses the archive. Prefer sending the downloaded package, then open it on the iPhone.
  2. AirDrop to the iPhone and choose Photos when iOS asks, not a random app.
  3. Open Photos and confirm the item shows the Live badge. Press and hold. You should see motion, not a frozen JPG.

Files, then Photos

  1. Save the ZIP to the Files app (iCloud Drive or On My iPhone).
  2. Tap the ZIP so iOS unpacks the JPG and MOV.
  3. Share the Live Photo into Photos. If only the JPG lands, the movie was left behind — go back to the folder and import the pair, not the still alone.

Cable

A cable copy into the Photos library works the same way. Copy the pair, not a lone JPG. A still without the MOV looks like a normal photo and will not animate.

Windows and Android can build the ZIP in the browser. They cannot set an Apple lock screen themselves. Generate the files on that computer, then AirDrop, use a cable, or move the ZIP through Files onto the iPhone.

Lock-screen tips

  1. In Photos, press and hold the new item. Motion should play. If it does not, the import kept only the JPG.
  2. Go to Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper and choose the Live Photo. You can also set the wallpaper from the Photos share sheet.
  3. On the wallpaper editor, leave Live Photo motion enabled. A still crop with motion turned off looks like any other wallpaper.
  4. Pick a key frame where the subject is readable. The JPG is what people see all day. The MOV is the reward for press-and-hold.
  5. Subtle, continuous motion reads better than a frantic meme on a lock screen. Product turns, light shifts, and short loops hold up. Busy text inside the GIF often becomes unreadable at wallpaper size.

Depth Effect and other wallpaper crops can hide edges. Check the preview on the actual phone before you delete the ZIP.

Common fails

  • Only a still arrives. AirDrop or share used “photo only.” Export or share the full Live Photo so the MOV travels with the JPG.
  • No Live badge in Photos. The GIF was saved as a file, or the ZIP was never unpacked into Photos. Run GIF to Live Photo again and import the pair.
  • Motion is sluggish or the file is huge. The GIF is too long or too large. Shorten the loop and keep dimensions near wallpaper size instead of a huge master file.
  • Black bars or a tiny subject. Aspect ratio does not match the lock screen. Crop square or 9:16 before converting.
  • Chat still shows a GIF. That is expected. Messengers strip Live Photo motion. Use the GIF for chat, and the Live Photo for the iPhone. The reverse path is Live Photo to GIF.
  • You started from video, not a GIF. Do not detour through GIF. Use Video to Live Photo and the iPhone video guide.

FAQ

### Can iOS set a GIF as a Live Photo lock screen directly?
No. Import a still-plus-movie pair. Build that pair with GIF to Live Photo, then add it as a wallpaper.
Do I have to upload the GIF?
No. The converter runs locally in your browser. Download the ZIP when it finishes.
What is inside the download?
A ZIP with a JPG still and a MOV clip. Keep both until Photos shows a Live badge and press-and-hold plays motion.
How long should the GIF be?
Short. A tight loop is easier on the lock screen than a long animation. If the source is already a video, use the video converter and stay near a few seconds of the best motion.
AirDrop gave me a normal photo. What failed?
Only the still moved. Send the full Live Photo again, or open the ZIP in Files and import both the JPG and the MOV into Photos.
Where do I convert a Live Photo back into a GIF?
Use Live Photo to GIF when chat or a website needs a loop. The lock screen should keep the Live Photo.
